LOPAWHITE Medi S certified for Steam Sterilization
Loparex’s new medical packaging paper grade LOPAWHITE Medi S has been granted the EN 868-3 certificate. This certificate, granted by the German research institute ISEGA, attests that LOPAWHITE Medi S’s product properties comply with the requirements of the standard and that the product is suitable for steam sterilization process.
“This official certificate was good news for us and for our customers”, says Loparex’s Development Manager Tommi Lehtisalo. “Our aim has been to develop an excellent product alternative for medical packaging end-uses, and this official certificate shows that our solution is technically to-the-point.”
“Medical packaging papers have very strict technical requirements”, states Tommi Lehtisalo. “The paper has to let steam or gas sterilants permeate through and at the same time create a microbial barrier against germ organisms. In addition, there are strict requirements for sealability properties and the so-called ‘clean peel’ characteristics that work faultlessly with the polypropene/polyethylene film used in medical packaging. We have developed separate grades for steam and for gas sterilization processes, and of course we also supply tailor-made customer grades.”
LOPAWHITE Medi S is especially well-suited for packaging of certain medical devices and products such as needles, catherers and surgical gloves because it is a cost-efficient product in comparison to e.g. materials made of synthetic fibres. Additionally, Direct Seal packagings are able to provide the required protection at a substantially lower cost than traditional coated systems.
More good news should arrive in the near future. Loparex expects to get the EN 868-6 certificate very soon. It will confirm that LOPAWHITE Medi complies also with the official requirements for gas sterilization.
